Rade Šerbedžija is an acclaimed Croatian actor and director of Serbian origin. His career began in the 1960s, after graduating from the Academy of Dramatic Art. Šerbedžija initially gained fame in Yugoslavia, especially after his memorable performance as ‘Hamlet’ in 1974 in Dubrovnik.

During the 1970s and 1980s, he emerged as one of the most prominent actors in Yugoslavia, featuring in films like ‘Uziska Republica’ (1974), ‘Hanna’s War’ (1988), and ‘Manifesto’ (1988), which opened the doors to international recognition.

In the 1990s, Šerbedžija expanded his career in Hollywood, appearing in notable films such as ‘Mission: Impossible 2’, ‘The Saint’, ‘Eyes Wide Shut’, ‘Snatch’, and ‘Space Cowboys’. He also participated in the television series ’24’ and in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1’.

His versatility as an actor has been complemented by his talent in poetry and music, with the publication of poetry books and music albums. Šerbedžija has been honored with multiple awards, including the Golden Arena for Best Actor at the Pula Film Festival and nominations for the Genie Award and Satellite Award for his role in ‘Fugitive Pieces’.

His influence in theater is also notable, as a co-founder of the Ulysses Theatre on the Brijuni Islands.

Rade Šerbedžija is a renowned Croatian actor and director of Serbian origin, known for his outstanding performances in both Yugoslavia and Hollywood.

Šerbedžija was trained at the Academy of Dramatic Art, beginning his career in 1966. Throughout his career, he has worked in a wide range of films and series, starting with his debut in ‘Gravitacija ili fantastična mladost činovnika Borisa Horvata’. During the 1970s and 1980s, he became one of the most popular Yugoslav actors. In 1974, his portrayal of ‘Hamlet’ in Dubrovnik catapulted him to stardom. During his career in Yugoslavia, he appeared in over 40 films, including prominent roles in ‘Uziska Republica’ (1974), ‘Hanna’s War’ (1988), and ‘Manifesto’ (1988).

His international career took off after the disintegration of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. He participated in Hollywood productions such as ‘Mission: Impossible 2’, ‘Mighty Joe Young’, ‘The Saint’, ‘Eyes Wide Shut’, ‘Snatch’, and ‘Space Cowboys’. He also made appearances in ‘Batman Begins’, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1′, and in the series ’24’.

In addition to his work in film and television, Šerbedžija is known for his poetry readings and has released four books of poetry and four music albums.

Among his accolades, he has received the Golden Arena for Best Actor at the Pula Film Festival four times, the Zoran Radmilović Award, the Croatian Theatre Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and the Orlando Award. His performance in ‘Fugitive Pieces’ (2007) earned him nominations for the Genie Award and Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Šerbedžija is also the founder of the Ulysses Theatre on the Brijuni Islands and has maintained a prolific career in theater. He is fluent in English, Russian, and Italian, and holds Croatian, Slovenian, and Macedonian passports. In addition to his professional success, Šerbedžija is known for his wide circle of friends and colleagues in the film industry, including Vanessa Redgrave, Charlize Theron, and Angelina Jolie.
